Data Protection

We have prepared this data protection and privacy statement to inform you about how we use your personal data.

Collecting, Processing and Use of Personal Data

Questions, suggestions or comments regarding data protection and the disclosure of personal data to third parties should be sent via e-mail to Deutsche Messe’s Data Protection Officer at datenschutz@messe.de .

Use of Cookies

Cookies are ASCII files (cookie.txt) in which text information is collected during your online session and stored. Your browser determines where the cookies are stored on your hard disk. Cookies contain information that is sent back to the host server during your next online visit. They can be read only by the server that originally placed them on your hard disk.

Deutsche Messe AG and service providers acting on behalf of Deutsche Messe AG employ cookies for the purposes of providing user functionality, undertaking advertising activities, aiding users in navigating its websites and for collecting marketing statistics.

As a default setting, most browsers automatically accept cookies. You can deactivate this function at any time and set your browser to notify you whenever a cookie is sent.

Social media plugins

The social media plugins on this website enable you to share articles of interest via your preferred networks.

Please note that by default these plugins transmit information (IP address, non SSL-protected data) as soon as you access the web page that contains them. This information is transmitted to the respective sites in the USA. To protect your privacy, we employ a 2-click procedure in which information is only passed on to third parties the moment you activate a button by clicking on it. After that you can use the button for sharing content in the usual way.

Creating a User Account for the Use of exclusive Online Services

Deutsche Messe AG offers a range of online services for registered users of its websites. It also offers a registration service for complimentary admission tickets. The registration processes for these services involve the creation of user accounts. Deutsche Messe Interactive GmbH, a subsidiary of Deutsche Messe AG, offers an additional service by which it brokers contacts between exhibitors and trade visitors. These two companies operate a "joint controllership", jointly collecting personal data in accordance with the relevant Declaration of Consent.

To enable your registration, we need your consent to collect, process and use your personal data. You can revoke your consent at any time, in which case the revocation will apply from the time of revocation forward.

Registration and Accreditation of Journalists

Deutsche Messe AG offers an online accreditation service that journalists can use to apply for press passes. It also offers as a simple online registration service that enables journalists to access the press-only areas of Deutsche Messe's websites. The registration processes for these services involve the creation of user accounts.

To enable your registration, we need your consent to collect, process and use your personal data. You can revoke your consent at any time, in which case the revocation will apply from the time of revocation forward.

Log file data & Web Analytics

Deutsche Messe automatically receives log file data whenever you access a Deutsche Messe website. Deutsche Messe uses this data – in pseudonymized form – for the purposes of website optimization, advertising and market research. You have the right to opt out of this at any time by sending an e-mail to Deutsche Messe’s Data Protection Officer.

In order to personalize and optimize this website, Deutsche Messe uses solutions and technologies provided by econda GmbH ( www.econda.de ) to collect and store anonymized user data and to compile pseudonymized usage profiles from it. For this purpose, the website may use cookies so that it can recognize your browser the next time you visit. However, Deutsche Messe will not associate your pseudonymized usage profile with identifying data about you unless you have given your express consent. In particular, your IP address is rendered unrecognizable as soon as it is received by the server, thereby making it impossible for your usage profile to be matched with your IP address. You can opt out of this data collection and storage at any time by clicking here , in which case the opt-out will apply from the time of opt-out forward.

Opt-outs use cookies and therefore apply only to the specific device and browser on which the opt-out cookie is stored. You may therefore wish to repeat the opt-out process on all devices and browsers that you use. If you delete an opt-out cookie, data collection will once again be enabled by default.

Deutsche Messe AG uses Google Analytics, a web analytics service provided by Google Inc. ("Google"). For the purpose of evaluating website usage, Google Analytics makes use of so-called "cookies", i.e. text files placed on your computer. The default behavior is for the website usage data generated by these cookies (including IP addresses) to be transmitted to and stored by Google on servers in the USA. However, for your protection, Deutsche Messe has activated IP anonymization. This automatically truncates/anonymizes the IP address of any user accessing this website from any country belonging to the European Economic Area (including all EU member states). Only in exceptional cases, i.e. technical failure within Europe, can it become necessary for your full IP address to be transmitted to and then truncated by Google servers in the USA. Acting on behalf of Deutsche Messe, Google uses the data generated solely for the tracking of website usage behavior, the compiling of reports on website activity for website operators and the provision of other services to Deutsche Messe in connection with website activity and Internet usage. Google will not associate your IP address with any other data held by Google. You can deactivate the use of cookies by making the appropriate settings in your browser. However, please note that doing so may render you unable to make full use of this website. Alternatively, you can prevent the use and further processing of all data generated by Google Analytics cookies (including your IP address) by downloading and installing the following browser plug-in: https://tools.google.com/dlpage/gaoptout?hl=en .

Anonymous site usage data are also collected and stored by means of a comScore method. The data are stored on your computer in the form of cookies which allow for anonymous analysis of website usage. It is not possible to use the data so collected to identify specific users. The data are used for optimization purposes only, and IP addresses are stored only in anonymized form. The data are not used for any other purpose, nor are they forwarded to any third parties. If you prefer not to allow anonymous use of your data, you may revoke your consent by following this link: http://www.sitestat.com/?lang=en_EN . This will prevent "Sitestat analytics tag" cookies from being stored for comScore analysis.

Display of Personalized Content on Various Websites

Research shows that displaying personalized (interest-based) advertising generally provides a more valuable user experience than advertising that is not personalized. We therefore use re-targeting cookies to make our website offering more interesting and valuable for our users. For this, we collect statistical information about you as a user. This information is processed by our advertising partners.

Use of Google Remarketing

We would like to use ads on our website to draw your attention to personalized offerings from us. To do this, we use remarketing tags from Google Inc., 1600 Amphitheatre Parkway, Mountain View, CA 94043, USA. For remarketing, Google stores cookies in your browser which enable Google to analyze your use of our website. The data on your use of our website (including your IP address) generated by the cookies are transmitted to and stored on a Google server in the USA. Google then truncates your IP address by deleting the last three digits. It is then no longer possible to match your IP address to any personally identifying data. Google is committed to compliance with the data protection requirements of the EU-US Privacy Shield Framework. This commitment is certified with the U.S. Department of Commerce and is enforceable under U.S. law.

Google uses the collected website usage data to analyze your use of the website, to generate reports for us on user activities and to enable us to provide additional Hackvention services in relation to your use of our website. We can also place ads on other websites to draw your attention to topics in which you have previously shown interest. Google may also disclose this data to third parties if required to do so by law or if Google has contracted those third parties to process the data on its behalf. Third-party providers, including Google, place ads on websites and use stored cookies to place personalized ads on the basis of previous visits by users to this website. According to its own published policies, Google will not link or combine your IP address with other data which it holds.

Use of DoubleClick

This website uses DoubleClick by Google, another online marketing tool provided by Google. DoubleClick uses cookies to target ads based on what's relevant to a user and to improve reporting on campaign performance. DoubleClick also uses cookies to avoid showing ads the user has ready seen. It does this by using unique, browser-specific cookie IDs to keep a log of which ads are shown to which browsers. Similarly, DoubleClick uses cookie IDs to log conversions related to ad requests – such as when a user views a DoubleClick ad and later uses the same browser to visit the advertiser's website and purchase a product or service. According to Google’s own published information, DoubleClick cookies do not contain any personally identifiable information.

Once your browser accepts a DoubleClick cookie, it is able to automatically establish a direct connection to Google's DoubleClick server. Please be aware that this may result in data being processed outside the European Union/European Economic Area. Please also be aware that Deutsche Messe AG has no influence or control over how Google subsequently handles or uses the data.

Advertising using ID Matching

We also use DoubleClick by Google to display personalized advertising. This involves exchanging a hashed (encoded) identifier (ID) with Google. Additional statistical information about your organization (e.g. size of your organization, industry in which it operates) can also be send to Google along with this ID. This encoded information helps us to target ads to your interests. The party bearing responsibility for this additional processing of your data under German data protection legislation is Google.

Disabling the use of Google Remarketing or DoubleClick

You may deactivate the use of cookies by making the appropriate settings in your browser. However, please note that doing so may render you unable to make full use of all functions available on our websites.

If you prefer not to receive interest-based (personalized) advertising, you can deactivate the use of cookies by Google for this purpose by going to https://www.google.com/settings/ads/ .

For further information on DoubleClick by Google, go to https://www.google.com/doubleclick/ . For information on Google's privacy policy in general, go to https://www.google.de/intl/en/policies/privacy/ . Facebook Custom Audiences

Our website also uses "Custom Audiences", the remarketing tool provided by Facebook Inc. ("Facebook"). With Custom Audiences, users of our website are shown personalized advertising (Facebook ads) when they subsequently log into their Facebook accounts. The service works by storing a Facebook tracking pixel in your browser when you access our website. When you access our website, tracking data is sent to Facebook, where it is matched with your Facebook account – if you have one.

You can deactivate the "Facebook Custom Audiences" function by logging into your Facebook account and going to https://www.facebook.com/settings/?tab=ads#_=_ . For further information on data processing by Facebook, go to https://www.facebook.com/about/privacy/ .

Outbrain

We also use the remarketing service provided by Outbrain Inc., 39 West 13th Street, 3rd floor, New York, NY 10011. This service shows personalized advertising to users of our website who also use other websites that use Outbrain. The service works by storing an Outbrain tracking pixel in your browser when you access our website. Then, when you access another website that uses Outbrain services, the tracking pixel establishes a link between the two sites. By tracking your website visits in this way, Outbrain is able to show you personalized advertising.

According to its own published information, Outbrain complies with European data protection and privacy legislation, and transfers of data from the EU/EEA to its servers in the USA are safeguarded by agreed standard contract clauses. For further information, you can read the Outbrain privacy and cookie policy at https://www.outbrain.com/legal/privacy#privacy-policy/ . This link also contains an opt-out button.

Ligatus

We also use the remarketing service provided by Ligatus GmbH, Hohenstaufenring 30-32, 50674 Cologne, Germany. This service shows personalized advertising to users of our website who also use other websites that use Ligatus. The service works by storing a Ligatus tracking pixel in your browser when you access our website. Then, when you access another website that uses Ligatus services, the tracking pixel establishes a link between the two sites. By tracking your website visits in this way, Ligatus is able to show you personalized advertising.

According to its own published information, Ligatus complies with German data protection and privacy legislation. For further information, you can read the Ligatus privacy and policy at https://www.ligatus.com/en/privacy-policy/ . To opt out of advertising by Ligatus, go to https://www.ligatus.com/en/privacy-policy#cookie_status
